Curcumin, as one of the prominent bioactive compounds of turmeric, has attracted special attention as a drug candidate in the treatment of a wide range of diseases. This study aimed to synthesize chitosan nanoparticles loaded with curcumin and comprehensively evaluate the antimicrobial properties of these nanocomposites against clinical strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae.
In this study, chitosan nanoparticles loaded with curcumin were synthesized using an optimized method. The physicochemical characterization of these nanoparticles was performed using the reliable techniques of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The antimicrobial efficacy of chitosan nanoparticles loaded with curcumin and curcumin alone was evaluated using the microdilution method and determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC).
Curcumin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles were synthesized using an ionic gelation process and optimized formulation conditions. The results showed that the particle size was in the range of below 200 nm and the average size was reported to be 160±10 nm. Antimicrobial evaluations showed that chitosan-curcumin nanoparticles exhibited significantly higher antimicrobial efficacy compared to pure curcumin; such that the MIC values were significantly reduced.
The findings of this study indicate that curcumin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles have significantly superior antimicrobial activity compared to free curcumin. These results highlight the potential of chitosan as a promising substrate in targeted drug delivery systems for the treatment of Klebsiella pneumoniae infections and justify further studies in this field.
