چکیده

Obesity has been linked to an increased risk of infections in athletes, with Staphylococcus aureus nasal colonization being a notable concern. This study investigated the association between body mass index (BMI) and S. aureus nasal colonization among 510 male and female athletes aged 14–55 years in Zakho city (2021–2022). Nasal swab cultures were used to assess colonization, and demographic data, height, and weight were analyzed using GraphPad Prism. The overall nasal carriage rate of S. aureus was 30.8%, with obese individuals exhibiting a higher prevalence (46.4%) compared to other BMI groups, though the difference was not statistically significant (p < 0.113). Among males, the highest carriage rate was in obese individuals (53.85%), while among females, it was in the overweight group (46.15%). These findings suggest that increased BMI may elevate the risk of S. aureus nasal colonization in athletes, highlighting the need for further studies exploring the influence of obesity across different ages and sexes.
